We Have Only Done Our Duty

Yesterday I got to video-talk with my friends in South Dakota.  I really like that.  Knowing what's going on in the lives of you all back in the States helps us feel a part of your lives, despite the 8,000 miles between us.

As I said good-bye to my friends in SD, they mentioned something like "you're brave" [for living in China].  This got me thinking "Are we brave?  Did it require some bravery for us to choose this lifestyle?"

I don't think we're brave at all.  And we're not just naively fearless.  I think what's happened here is that the Father has compelled us to trust Him ---- over time and through experiences He has demonstrated astonishing trustworthiness.

Our service here in China is just a duty which we were told to do.  Like the Teacher said:

"Suppose one of you had a servant plowing or looking after the sheep. Would he say to the servant when he comes in from the field, 'Come along now and sit down to eat'? Would he not rather say, 'Prepare my supper, get yourself ready and wait on me while I eat and drink; after that you may eat and drink'? Would he thank the servant because he did what he was told to do?

So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, 'We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.' "
