Like So Weird

1. Baby sleeping while biting side of water bottle.

2. Construction man sleeping on metal rod.

3. Crop-circle-like-hickeys on man's back.

Ok, this one requires some explanation. Our Chinese Auntie tried to cure Drew's slight fever and upset stomach with these suction cups. It's called fire cupping. Hmm can't say that we're on board with this practice, but Auntie was real fired up about helping Drew, so what the heck, right? She covered all the bases though, uplifting him as well.

I asked Drew to write about the experience, but he refused, "Ma back huurts. Grrrr."

Notice there's a good inch of flesh sucked into the cups.

Drew is a trooper! And the fever/stomach ache is better...but it might take awhile for his back to heal.

Babysitting

Drew was sick today (better now). Rachel and Titus babysat our coworkers' kids so the two couples could have a date. The roster with ages: boy - 8, boy - 7, girl - 6, girl - 6, girl - 4.

It was a lovely day, so we spent most of the four hours outside riding bikes, skateboarding, playing in a tree, and eating ice cream. Titus never knew older siblings could be so much fun!

So five kids and a baby...I thought of you, Louise. It was nice, but I think Drew and I will stop at two.

Dear Elida

Hi Elida,

This is Rachel, Drew and Titus. Your mom said that you have been asking questions about China. We would like to tell you about China.

On this map, where do you live? Where does Titus live? If you went to see Titus, how would you get there (walk, car, fly, etc.)? How long would it take to get there?

This the most famous place in China. It's called the Great Wall of China. It was built a long time ago to keep out the bad guys. Would you like to climb the Great Wall of China?

These pictures show some Chinese people at a temple. This is what they do if they want to ask for help. What do you do when you need help? Who do you ask for help? How is your Helper different than theirs?

Elida, we hope you enjoyed learning about China. Maybe someday you can come to visit. Otherwise, we will see you this summer in July (that's around Ezra's birthday).

Here are some pictures of you with Titus and Ezra!

Bye Elida!

Love, Drew Rachel & Titus

Photos from Today

This two-year-old girl is the niece of our friends, Mr. & Mrs. Tang, who bake and sell bread outside our apartment complex. The Tangs have a 26 month-old boy who lives in the countryside. They haven't seen him for over two months, and they really miss him. It seems that his girl cousin and Titus have some affections for each other. Do you see her little pony tail sticking straight up?

Bao Mu, our Chinese friend, made us stir-fried green beans for lunch today, and allowed Titus to gnaw on a raw one. Do you see his bottom tooth in the third picture? And look how he's pushing himself up into crawl position! He likes to bend his knees, wagging his bottom forward and back.

It was a clear and warm day, so after dinner we strolled along the Xiang River, a stone's throw from our apartment. In the background you see a little residence and store floating on the river, and behind that the bridge which we cross about every other day for tutoring or grocery shopping. In the second picture down, you can see a mysterious boat that's stuck on the land. This general area on the Xiang is actually quite fascinating. There's an enormous sandbar-like island in the middle where Mao Zedong, the 1949 founder of the People's Republic of China, swam in his youth. It was in Changsha that Mao developed his ideology and began his military and political career. On May first the free island is becoming a tourist trap; admission will cost 100 kuai per person. For 100 kuai you could buy a nice dinner for six people, one-hundred popsicles, two big packs of diapers, or two hours of private Chinese tutoring.

Drew and Titus are sleeping. I think I'll do likewise.

A Rich Day

The morning began with a much needed Listening time. If you read an older post, you know that I've been wondering which relationships to pursue. I hang out with lots of people, I'm friends with lots of people...but I want to be better friends with fewer people so we can have more meaningful conversations. So I asked "to whom do you want me to reach out?" and "in what ways?". He gave me a wonderful specific list, and I'm excited to have a sort of game plan. Not that I think of relationships as a game plan, but there's so many people, I just want to be intentional about where I'm directed. *Sigh*, it's good to have a Guide.

In the afternoon we were getting ready leave for our Sunday meeting. I put Titus, dressed in blue, on his stomach in the middle of our rose-patterned queen-sized bed. I stood within arm's reach of him, putting up my hair in front of our dresser mirror. Suddenly the spot of blue disappeared over the edge of the crimson bedspread, dropping two feet onto the wood floor. If you didn't catch that -- Titus fell of the bed! I don't know if he or I screamed first, but by the time Drew ran in, I had scooped Titus into my arms and we were both crying (me because I felt so guilty). But Titus cried for less than thirty seconds. Drew and I applied pressure on and moved different body parts to check for pain, but he was fine. His eyes appeared normal and tracked objects normally. He responded to noises normally. No bruises. Nothin'. I suppose Titus landed in the optimal position -- on his stomach and elbows -- still it's remarkable that he cried for such short time and showed no sign of pain or injury. It was undoubtedly the Father's protection.

Every evening around 8pm, I nurse Titus in his dark and quiet bedroom. Watching his sweet little face fall to sleep, I feel so much love for him welling within me that I have to grit my teeth. He is precious. I often wonder "Where did you come from Titus? A year ago we didn't know you...but here you are...a NEW person, so alluring and charming and vivacious!". Titus is fearfully and wonderfully made. So each night he falls asleep cuddled next to me, nursing. Then I try not to wake him as I bring his little head up to rest on my shoulder, one of his arms wrapped around my neck and the other around my arm. In the dark and quiet I feel him breathing on my skin, and every night in this peaceful moment I uplift my little son. It is some incredible privilege for a mother to ask blessings over her baby son's whole life. There's so much to ask for, so much potential. Each night I'm led to uplift something different and very specific, often it's a quality that young men are charged to embody.

Likewise, urge the younger men to be self-controlled. Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity, and sound speech that cannot be condemned... (Paul's letter to Titus 2:6-8)

Remind them to be submissive to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good work, to speak evil of no one, to avoid quarreling, to be gentle, and to show perfect courtesy toward all people. (Paul's letter to Titus 3:1-2)

For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another. But when His goodness and loving kindness appeared, He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to His own mercy... (Paul's letter to Titus 3:3-5)

Please consider uplifting Titus today. We long so much for him to grow towards his Father and become a man who lives courageously by the Book.

Also consider uplifting our intentional relationships here, too. We can do all the tilling and watering, but you-know-who has got to give the growth.

Goodnight,

Rachel & Drew

This Is The Way We Wash The Clothes...

Sorry, this is the most mundane post ever. You get to see how we do the laundry. Well, actually I'm posting this to show you how Titus loves playing with the clothes hanging out to dry.

The washing machine is in our kitchen. I like it there because it creates more counter space.

We hang the clothes out to dry in our bedroom, which has horizontal metal rods for this exact purpose. It takes maybe three days for most of the stuff to dry.

Titus wheels in and has a merry time collecting the colorful dangling "toys".

Hot Pot and Watering Cement

Have you eaten Hot Pot before? We joined Russian and Turkish classmates for lunch after class today at a fun Hot Pot restaurant. Baskets of vegetables, dumplings, tofu and noodles are continuously dumped into the table's centerpiece, a vat of burning-hot oily liquid. Partakers dig out pieces of food. If you ever eat Hot Pot, you gotta be careful not to drop your chopsticks in there; nobody wants to eat boiled wood sticks.

Titus the big seven-month-old sat in a high chair for the first time.

About Watering Cement...

If you remember, our original plan was for Drew to teach English to Chinese university students. Since we had to/got the great opportunity (sincerely!) to be students of Chinese instead, the focus of our intentional relationships shifted. Rather than investing in Chinese university students, we invest in classmates, teachers, and tutors. Our tutors are Chinese college students. A couple of our team's tutors have been reading the word and seeking, and we meet with them one-on-one for several hours each week. Very cool.

As for classmates...well, our classmates are foreigners, mostly Russians and Koreans. Though we are good friends, these classmates are not hungry like Chinese university students. That is, the soil isn't so great.

Are we just watering cement? What farmer spends his time cultivating the concrete instead of the fertile soil?

The fertile soil is most definitely Chinese university students. We've got friends who teach English at this university. They're so swamped with interested students that they plead "anytime you want to hang out with our students...we could really use you!"

just thinking about it,

Drew & Rachel

Whiteys

Shoot, I guess you can't really see them in these pictures, but Titus has 1/4 of a tooth and 1/8 of another tooth -- the bottom front teeth. He makes some contorted faces but otherwise hasn't been cranky or drooly. Although, I suspect that the cold symptoms, low-grade fever and inconsolable crying he experienced three weeks ago were at least agitated by teething.

You dental hygiene folks would be happy to know that Drew gave Titus a toothbrush for early practice. Since Titus naturally chews on everything, he was happy to "brush".

This is sort of unrelated to teething, but today we received a package of baby food from another family living in China -- they had extras which were never used. Much appreciated! Otherwise we've been washing, boiling, chopping, grinding and freezing vegetables for baby food.

He's Alive in Changsha, Too

Wishing you a happy and joy-filled Easter! We would have loved to celebrate with you here in Changsha.

Although we were missing you, our day was filled with good company. The music, bread & juice, message and fellowship had such special meaning for us today. We believe it was a sweet, sweet song in His hears.

with love,

Friday Night Coffee Shop

Good coffee, live music, Chinese corner, free wireless, a place to study and meet with friends -- and it's located two blocks from our apartment.

This evening some Uighur guys were supposed to play ethnic music, but I guess it didn't work out. (Uighurs, aka Xinjiang Ren, are from the northwest province of China and have a culture distinct from the Han Chinese.) So this other American guy jammed. Rachel is scheduled to get up there as soon as she builds her repetiteur. Tonight we mingled with our friends' Chinese university students, who are all English majors. Good times.

We're looking forward to this weekend, as we have some special plans for Sunday. We hope your weekend holiday is joyful and meaningful, too!
