The Fifth Tone is closing Friday. After four years of good business the owner and manager are moving in new directions.
Last night I joined in the final English corner, which kept Drew or me occupied every Tuesday for the past year. Occasionally these nights were agonizing, squashed in a hoop of shy middle school girls, coaxing them to speak. Yet most Tuesdays were genuinely meaningful, talking worldview, politics, current events, ethics, and history with grad students and young professionals. I made four lasting friends, two of whom are coming for dinner on Saturday.
