Preschool's Out

Titus is on summer break from preschool as of yesterday. The school year begins around early September, breaks in mid-January for Chinese New Year, and resumes March through early July.

Titus originally went for half days M-F. But since he enjoyed school so much we began sending him for full days like all the other kids. He was at school M, T, W, F 8:30am - 5:30pm! It's a long time, but he thrived --so happy, so energetic, polite and lots of friends-- and it's nice not being THE oddball.

Titus and his teacher have a sweet connection; everyday they exchange a big hug and kiss. This teacher will follow the same class for the next two years. Titus has many buddies who treat him with acceptance though he looks different. On the last day Titus and his favorite girl were running around the playground holding hands and laughing!

Thanks to the teachers' persistence, Titus improved over this school year. At the fall open house for parents, I observed Titus' lacking participation, and by spring he was markedly better. He learned all kinds of preschool knowledge and made great gains in Chinese language. He's taught me a handful of vocabulary words and begun using grammar structures that I can't produce.

Highlights of the year...
  • each kid raising his/her own plant
  • fall dance show for families, Drew performed with the dad's group!
  • fall open house for parents
  • P.E. class all year, including basketball, relays, etc.-- the teacher is a cool young guy
  • every kid brings in a cake on his/her birthday
  • watching TV after lunch and before nap (that's Titus' favorite...)
  • Christmas party for families
  • eating supper at a classmate's house; having his family over here too
  • kite-flying at the park with families
  • spring dance competition with families
  • each kid raising some silkworms
  • Children's Day carnival with families
  • spring open house for parents
  • spring art activity with families
  • shadowing teacher in the classroom was a college guy the kids called "Big Brother Wu"
  • playing on the playground after school with Mike & Jonathon and classmates

Below are photos of the family art activity held in the multi-purpose room.

counting the graces
thank you Father for
a safe place for Titus, the hands of respectable teachers who really care
acceptance into this community, little friends!

  1. I absolutely love your stories. I like the addition of counting the graces--it lifts me up when I read them.
